Dr Paul Theriault is a Naturopathic Doctor and has a BSc in Biological Sciences which qualifies him to write his books with the perfect balance of both biological and homeopathic understanding.
The foreword by Michal Yakir gives high praise to his work. As she says, "Paul Theriault's Mammals book is an ingenious compilation of innovative and traditional ... with which he opens up this field of mammals' remedies."
The book contains all Monotremes, Marsupials and Placentals on which there is homeopathic information. The characteristics of remedies, as part of a group and individually, are given from a developmental, physical and sensation perspective. Ancient marsupials, herbivores, elephants, pandas, canines, felines, rodents, bats, beavers, marine mammals and primates are all covered.
Provings - One of the most innovative parts of the book is that Paul has brought together the various provings of different animal parts of the same animal in one place. For example, with Lac Leoninum we find reference to lac symptoms, claw symptoms or in other remedies comparison of urine or blood.
With the horse (Equus ferus caballus) he gives us information on Hippomanes, Castor equi, Lac equinum, Urinum equininum and horse hair all in one place. He also gives information on Hippozaneum (the horse disease, glanders) and Malandrinum (a nosode made from horse grease).
He only lists three whales and I believe there may be more. Ambra grisea (Sperm Whale), Balaenoptera musculus (Blue Whale), Eschrichtius robustus (Grey Whale).
It could be useful to compare Paul's work alongside the Joshi's published works. In understanding newer remedies there is still much of the clinical presentation to be understood. Reading about any remedy in different materia medicae will show different facets of the remedy. I believe that Paul's work in this book is the most comprehensive work on mammals, and in other volumes of the animal kingdom, as a whole.
Latin and English directory - Information on any mammal is easy to find in the book as there is not only a comprehensive table of contents, but also an alphabetical list of remedies making it easy to find the information that you are looking for on any mammal remedy. Where the Latin name is given, the English name is clearly displayed alongside it.
Introductory chapters offer Paul's approach and understanding of the Developmental Approach in Homeopathy and Layers. layers in this context refers to developmental columns rather than a particular way of prescribing. Paul explains it thus p16, "Just as the Periodic Table is the journey of the minerals projected into the layer structure, and the plant table that of plants, the table of animals is the journey of animals moving through the layer structure within the context of the animal kingdom."
Paul provides extensive lists of proved and unproved remedies in each mammalian subgroup. He also lists the pharmacies from which the remedies are available. The book is well illustrated throughout with good quality black and white photographs. Mammals are discussed within their evolutionary context and in human culture and medicine. Themes and issues are tabulated for subgroups, orders and families.
Key issues - Each remedy is presented with the following format: Source, nomenclature and previous history in homeopathy; Key issues; Mind, Physical symptoms; Clinical; Miasm; Source; Colour preference; Remedy Comparison; Cases if known.
There are 15 new triturations within the book, some of new and some of well-known remedies.
Paul has undertaken an enormous project and produced a very useable reference book.
